the fab folks at kinetic, who created an awesome mini-me, asked for an item of personal value to be exhibited alongside my doll.
I chose a picture of my mum, taken when she was a nurse in london, pre-marriage. that picture, along with one of my dad, in full sartorial regalia, taken when he worked as a banker in london, used to travel around the world with me, and, propped up on my bedside table, would personalize my hotel rooms and remind me of home. fashion weeks can be a long-drawn, lonely affair and having family alongside made the traveling a lot warmer.
I have since, sadly, misplaced the picture of my dad, and, as a result, the traveling days of my mom’s photograph have also ended. it now sits safely on my mantle in my study at home in singapore.
thanks to modern technology and the genius of kinetic, they have managed to recreate the fragile photograph, lace-edge, yellowed-sepia and all, for the exhibition.
this one’s for you, mother.
