being the show producer and fashion director of the new paper new face model search for slightly over a decade has been one of the more enjoyable aspects of my career.
not only has it been a great avenue to discover the freshest fashion faces, it has also proven to be one of the best ways to groom and nurture the next generation of stars. with an alumni list that stretches from singapore’s current it girl and int’l model vivien ong to former top model serena adsit, tv personality angelique teo to actresses julie tan and jayley wu, I would say that this is, singularly, the most honest, sincere and successful model search I have ever worked on.
the new paper new face show is also a rather unique formula, juxtaposing fashion with theatre, music and art to create a truly spectacular dramatization of the season’s trends.
this year’s show was truly a joy to conceptualise and produce. drawing inspiration from suzy menkes article “the circus of fashion”, my team and I created a kaleidoscope of experiences, drawing upon Suzy’s declaration that “today, the people outside fashion shows are more like peacocks than crows”.
we worked with some truly amazing talent – singapore fashion labels revasseur, l’ile aux ashby, evenodd and WSDM created some amazing pieces for the show. we collaborated with dance choreographer lisa keegan to bring to life some spectacular theatre-meets-fashion numbers. and music star benjamin kheng performed in a visually stunning sequence, with magician jack*magic conjuring doves out of thin air, and four prancing model-fawns in 6 inch hoof-heels, 3 feet tall antlers and the most surreal fashions of joe chia. and everything was stitched seamlessly together by host – theatre impresario and performer extraordinaire, the amazing hossan leong.
the winners were noelle woon, jade rasif and tan ying yi.
so, in the end, did the best girl win? in my eyes, every contestant brought something special to the show, and I wish it could have been a 20-way tie.
