the eighties was an exciting time for fashion, especially in paris. today’s solid gold sunday’s post pays tribute to what many consider the golden age of the runway, and was inspired by a retro video – footage from “a roundup of spring-summer fashion 1984” fashion report by Antonia Hilke” – that singapore fashion lecturer ( and ex-designer ) gary goh sent to me.

according to retrowaste , “1980s fashion can be commended for its creativity. Some fashion designers abandoned history, some borrowed from it, while others tried to design the future. Designers abandoned all convention — and their creations were interesting to say the least”

check out the collections, circa 1984, by the likes of Dorothée Bis, Yves Saint Laurent, Comme des Garçon by Rei Kawakubo, Junko Koshino, Thierry Mugler, Ann Marie Beretta, Claude Montana, Issey Miyake, Chloë by Karl Lagerfeld ( look at how young and hip they looked way back then !!! ), and whilst you’re at it, reminise about the time when fashion shows were actually fun to watch, and models were brimming over with personality on the runway. see if you can spot the all-time runway greats – iman, dalma, pat cleveland, sonia cole, sayoko, anna bayle …..

…. and here’s a special treat for fans of our eighties singapore supermodels – check out the fab footage of hanis in the YSL segment

whilst snooping around the internet, i also managed to unearth a couple of archival pics of hanis backstage in paris … here she is, after a YSL show, with the late designer

here she is with the late couturier jean louis scherrer … Image

do you recognise the model on the left? it’s none other than pat kraal, the other singaporean who burned up the runways of paris in the eighties …

lets close off the post with one of hanis’ most iconic pictures … her cover of time magazine, lensed by the amazing russel wong …

they certainly don’t make models like they used to …

enjoy, and have a fab sunday !!!
