the asian couture federation organised their very first asian fashion awards at the marina bay sands ballroom. fashionistas rubbed shoulders with fashionistas as the who’s who of Singapore – frederick lee, lionnel lim, dick lee, tina tan and joe spinelli ( to name but a few ) played host to their international counterparts – bryanboy, songzio, sebastian gunawan and guo pei, amongst others.
the night began spectacularly with the renato balestra show, produced by dominic min and fairul shah. the highly respected italian couturier, whose storied history stretches back to the time of capucine and sophia loren, presented several lovely capsules of the most extravagantly beaded creations.
and, of course, there were the awards. the evening saw the likes of songzio, silvia venturini fendi, giuseppe spinelli and frederick lee being honoured for their respective work in the industry. and a surprise award that swung my way for outstanding contribution to the singapore fashion industry, which I dedicated to all singaporean fashion practitioners past and present
it was an awesome night of the loveliest fashions ( the evening ended with a collective showcase of the best asian couturiers, and a heroic turn on the catwalk by singapore model sara chan, who made her way up and down the long runway despite one broken heel and a massively heavy and cumbersome, fully embroidered and fur-lined cape by chinese couturier guo pei ) and wonderful company.
I had my little fan boy moment when I hosted 80’s singapore supermodel ethel fong ( whose tearsheets used to grace the insides of my school files ) at my table, alongside today’s faces alex lim, ian luah and alan wong, style maven tracy phillips, radio personality yasminne cheng and musicians audrey lim and syed hyder
