Vietnam staged it’s first international fashion week in Ho Chi Minh City in early December, And what a spectacular week of amazing fashion it was. From the Japanese label Somarta and Korean SongZio to Thailand’s Issue, Parisian couturiers On Aura Tout Vu to Singapore’s very own Frederick Lee, each brought their own special brand of magic to the runway at the new GEM centre, where the shows were staged.
Vietnam was represented by a bevy of designers, with premier designer ( and Asian Couture Federation member ) Nguyen Cong Tri kicking off the week with a stunning collection at the opening gala. However, the one designer that caught our eye was 18-year old Vietnamese designer Ly Giam Tien, who recently won the Vietnam version of Project Runway. With zero fashion education. he put together a well-crafted, thoughtfully styled collection of beautifully-executed looks, with excellent fabric manipulation and strong silhouettes. Turn the garments inside out and you’ll discover the finest lining, the various pieces lined up and matched with such razor sharp precision. His was a collection that shone bright above some of his more established local counterparts. So rare to find one so green with such talent.
my team were flown up as show consultants and got a birds-eye view of the proceedings.
